I founded Melanie Norgate - Animal Training in Year. We are a specialised animal training business which values ethical treatment of animals and the gentle and positive application of scientifically based animal training techniques.
One of my first memories is helping my grandmother to wean Staffordshire bullterrier puppies. I learned from her how much we can teach young puppies even before they leave their mother if we are gentle and motivating. As a student, I kept up my time with dogs volunteering at the Auckland SPCA and my local vet clinic, and working as a dog walker and pet-sitter. Since then I have been lucky to work with several species as a researcher and to take a wonderful range of native Australian animals to schools, festivals and birthday parties to teach the public about conservation.
I completed a Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services through the Delta Society to become an nationally qualified and accredited dog trainer. I chose this particular course because the content is underpinned by current, peer-reviewed scientific research, several of the instructors are veterinary behaviourists, and the techniques are useful for any species. In order to keep my accreditation current, I undertake ongoing education and constantly review my techniques to ensure they are up to date, effective and ethical.
I now live with my partner and two-year old daughter, our brand new Rhodesian ridgeback puppy, 12 year old Burmese cat, and a small selection of native animals.
