Personalised dog training

Melanie Norgate Provides at-home, personalised dog training

We’ll meet your goals using simple techniques that fit neatly into your daily routine - because I know how it overwhelming it can feel to squeeze training around family and work.

I start by considering how genetics, learning and current environment are shaping your dog’s behaviour. Then together we can plan simple changes in your routine or training that will make sense to your dog and meet their needs as well as solving your problems.

With this evidence-based and ethical approach, your dog won’t just behave better - your dog will feel better too.

Video Consultations

This service is a great way to address behaviour issues in the home - in fact, it is better than in person for some issues because the dog is not distracted having a stranger around. You get guided support to do the training in your own home so you are set up to continue easily once the session is over.

During Covid lockdowns, it was highly effective for: separation anxiety, barking, destructive behaviour, jumping, excitement around visitors, preparing for baby, managing kids and dogs, managing cats and dogs, puppy preparation or training, and guided training practice.

  • You’ll start by filling in a behavioural history form when you book and I’ll use this to prepare for our session. You will also be welcome to send video footage as long as it is safe to record.

  • During the initial consult, we’ll discuss the cause your dog’s behaviour and make a simple plan to meet your goals. We’ll practice as much training as we can, and we can easily add followup calls or switch to a video package if you want extra support.

  • I’ll email you a written version of the plan plus any useful info sheets and video demos, so you have a clear reminder to refer back to anytime.

  • You can send footage between sessions for easy access to feedback or troubleshooting.

  • It is easy to swap video calls for sessions in Murrumbeena or to add on followup for issues like recall, loose lead walking or reactivity where you might prefer in person support.

  • If you’re not sure how to use Zoom for video calls, just let me know and I’ll phone to help you set it up and practice using it before the consult at no extra charge.

Benefits of Video Consults

I’ve been providing video consults since the start of the Covid pandemic and have found that for most issues the results are as good as in-person training. There are also a number of benefits…

  • You don’t need to live near me to access expert, evidence-based behavioural training.

  • It is safe and reliable for anyone worried about sharing germs.

  • You will learn to solve problems in a realistic setting at home, without a trainer there affecting your dog’s behaviour.

  • We can easily split training into short, focussed, cost-effective sessions.

  • You can fit it in easily between other meetings if needed.

  • I can record the consult if you want to refer back to it later.

  • I can provide feedback on footage between consults to keep training on track.

How video consults work

  • Book a time that suits you, then just show up at the Zoom meeting with a jar of treats and your dog.

  • You can send me footage of problems beforehand if you want to, but a verbal explanation is fine if filming would stress you or your dog.

  • I will discuss problems and goals, devise a personalised training and management plan, and guide you through the training with live instructions and feedback.

  • I provide detailed reminder notes and useful resources such as handouts and video demonstrations.

  • After a consult, you care welcome to send footage or questions for more feedback.

Cost

  • Initial consult $150 - includes 60-75 min Zoom session, emailed written training and management plan with any appropriate resources and demos, feedback on footage or emails sent between the session, vet report or referral if required.

  • Followups $75 for approx 30 mins.

  • Two-hour package $250. This includes an initial consult and two follow up sessions.

In Person

This service is ideal for reactive dogs, loose-lead walking or recall, or if you need in-person support with practical training skills. We’ll discuss your training goals and the underlying cause of any behaviour problems. Then we’ll create a simple training plan and go through each of the skills together so you are confident about what to do in everyday life with your dog. I’ll leave you with a written plan then email any extra resources you might need such as info sheets or video demos.

You can update me by email and ask questions at any time. Followup training sessions are not compulsory but improve results as we can check progress, troubleshoot or add skills.

Initial consults are 75-90 minutes and follow-ups are 50-60 mins. For practice around reactivity triggers, 30 minutes followups in Murrumbeena will be available if more appropriate.

  • Reactive dogs: Please book a session in Murrumbeena for help with reactive dogs with issues such as fear, aggression and lunging. I have a great setup with helper dogs, bikes, scooters, quiet and busy traffic options and a small off leash park so we can set up exactly the right practice conditions. Followup sessions of 30 minutes may be appropriate to practice reactivity training in Murrumbeena.

  • Loose-lead walking and recall practice: Murrumbeena provides a number of great options for safely practicing around a varying level of distraction.

  • In-home training: This is handy for jumping on visitors or dogs who are scared to leave home. Available up to 20 mins travel from Murrumbeena. Video consults or coming to Murrumbeena are both highly effective alternatives.

Cost

  • Initial consult $250 in Murrumbeena or adjacent suburbs - includes 75-90 min in person behaviour assessment, training practice, written training and management plan with any appropriate resources and demos, followup support via email or phone, vet report or referral if required.

  • Followup training sessions $160 for 50-60 mins.

  • Followup dog reactivity training practice (no new issues) $80 per half hour

  • Travel fee if greater than 20 mins and up to 30 mins from Murrumbeena $30
